Design Inspiration -
Vidhana Soudha, iconic seat of Karnataka legislature, has not only retained much of its original grandeur but has inspired similar structures elsewhere. Around 5,000 labourers, 1,500 chiselers, masons and wood carvers worked for almost five years (1951-1956) to complete the structure that is spread over 60 acres in the heart of Bengaluru. The structure was inspired by multiple styles of architecture, including Dravidian, Indo-Islamic and British styles, and was built largely with Bangalore Granite, Magadi Pink and Turvekere Black stones excavated from areas around Bengaluru. Vidhana Soudha was also a symbol representing democracy as against the monarchy that existed earlier.
Spread over 240 acres, Lalbaug is one of the largest gardens of Bengaluru. A historical garden, Lalbagh was built by former Mughal Hyder Ali, in 1760 and was completed by his son Tipu Sultan. Its most arresting feature is the Glass House, built in the very center and modeled after the Crystal Palace in London. It was built in 1889 to commemorate the visit of Albert Victor, grandson of Queen Victoria and former Prince of Wales. Originally meant to acclimatize the foreign and exotic plants to the Indian weather, this structure is now the venue of Bengaluru’s famous biannual flower shows that happen twice a year around during India’s Republic and Independence Days.
Bengaluru houses the headquarters of Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) at Antariksh Bhavan. ISRO is the pioneer of Space Technology in the world and has many missions that include the SLV, PSLV & GSLV Rocket Programs, many satellites including IRS, Astrosat, etc. It runs the world’s most economically efficient Space programs including the Moon & Mars missions – Chandrayaan & Mangalyaan. It is now getting ready to launch its Gaganyaan program – to put humans into space.
Basavanagudi - The Bull Temple - Built in 1537 AD by Kempegowda, the founder of the city, the monolithic Nandi Bull is one of the largest in India at 4.6 m (height) x 6.1 m (length). It lies in the southern part of the city in an area named after it. The Bugle Rock garden is adjacent to the Bull temple and gets its name from a bugle call made from the top of a very large rock formation to alert nearby residents.
