India is the only country where technological advancements and ancient beliefs go hand in hand. In many parts of India a new car, a new building, new business is incomplete without a “NAZAR BATTU” that is a Nazar Battu mask to protect one’s home or possession from all the evil spirits and evil eyes of jealous competitors. The mask resembles the face of the devil (as mentioned in Hindu mythology) and is used to scare bad energy away. It is used for both ritualistic and decorative purpose across the country. Nazar battu mask is believed to spread positive energies around us.
This mask is one of the Cherial masks which are a modified version of the Nakashi art, distinctive to the Cheriyal village, of Warangal district in Telangana. Wandering storytellers used painted Cheriyal masks to build intrigue for the gathered crowd in any festival to tell religious stories and folklore. The artistic tradition of making masks, handed down from generations is now a boon to the craftsmen in this Cheriyal village.
These mask is painstakingly wrought using a light wood base, tamarind seeds and sawdust.
