This 500 piece folk art puzzle in Orissa Patchitra painting comes with a picture card and spreads out to a bright 50cm X 40cm painting when completed.

In this 500 piece folk art puzzle painting shows Rama and Sita sitting upon a lotus throne. Upon returning to his kingdom of Ayodhya, Rama was crowned king. Hanuman, the monkey hero and paradigm of devotees, worships Rama by touching his foot. Other devotees pay their obeisance to the royal godly couple. The Patachitra shows many important events in the life of Sri Ram. His Birth, training under Sage Vishwamitra, marriage to Sita, years of exile into the forest, abduction of Sita by Ravana and the attack on Lanka to free Sita.

Pattachitra style of painting is one of the oldest and most popular folk art forms of Odisha. The name Pattachitra has evolved from the Sanskrit words patta, meaning canvas, and chitra, meaning picture.  This art form too finds its strong roots in the traditions of Lord Jagannath, the presiding deity of Orissa. The creation of the Pattachitra paintings is a disciplined art form, and the chitrakars maintain rigidity in their use of colours and patterns, restricting the colours to a single tone.

Loved the Image

Our family spent a pleasant sunday doing this puzzle. You can be a cmplete novice and still enoy making the puzzle. The pieces are thick and solid. The piece shapes are fun and not the standard puzzle piece shape one finds. This makes solving the puzzle fun but on the negative side to it is that the puzzle doesn't hold together well when assembled. The image is beautiful and we spent a lot of time explaining each panel of the story to our daughter who was fascinated with the Manjari (pictoral) style of story telling, I really hope they come up with more of these manjari style puzzles. I have all three that they have released. I also hope they make a larger 1000 piece puzzle. Its a great gift item for people who are into jigsaw puzzling and can be solved by anyone above the age of 7.
I just wish the pieces had more of a matt finish than glossy as it made seeing some of the details in the darker pieces a little difficult. Also some pieces were joined and could not be separated completely without breaking them.
