Visual Story of Bihar’s Evolution

This poster traces the political and territorial journey of Bihar, a state with ancient roots and modern reconfigurations. Once part of the Bengal Presidency, Bihar became a separate province in 1912, following growing demands for administrative autonomy. It remained one of the largest states post-Independence until the Bihar Reorganisation Act, 2000, which led to the creation of Jharkhand, fulfilling long-standing tribal aspirations for self-governance. The movement for a separate tribal state, led by figures like Shibu Soren, had been gaining momentum since the 1970s. Earlier, in 1956, Bihar also lost the Purulia district to West Bengal under the States Reorganisation Commission, reflecting linguistic considerations.

Spatial Dynamics and District Evolution

The poster features maps and visuals that document Bihar’s changing borders—from a unified state in 1947 to its post-2000 configuration. It captures the formation of Jharkhand, which took with it Bihar’s southern mineral-rich and tribal belt, dramatically altering Bihar’s geography and demography. The visuals also highlight early administrative divisions and name changes, alongside glimpses of ancient heritage like Nalanda University, emphasizing the region’s deep historical and educational significance. These layers—colonial legacies, linguistic redrawing, tribal assertions, and cultural pride—combine to tell a compelling story of Bihar’s evolution through time.
