Visual Story of Chhattisgarh’s Evolution

This poster presents the layered political and cultural evolution of Chhattisgarh, a region with ancient roots in Dakshin Kosala and rich tribal heritage. From being ruled by Marathas and later annexed by the British in 1853, Chhattisgarh became part of the Central Provinces in 1862. The region was historically marginalized under colonial forest laws, sparking resistance movements such as the Bhumkal Rebellion of 1910. Calls for autonomy intensified after Independence, with early demands for a separate Gondwana state and regional leaders like Khubchand Baghel advocating for statehood. These efforts culminated in the Madhya Pradesh Reorganisation Act, and Chhattisgarh was officially established as India’s 26th state on November 1, 2000, with Raipur as its capital.

Spatial Dynamics and District Evolution

The poster showcases Chhattisgarh’s spatial transformation—from a division within the Central Provinces to a full-fledged state with increasing administrative granularity. Since 2000, the number of districts has steadily grown, reflecting both tribal diversity and governance needs—from Dantewada splitting into Sukma and Bijapur to the creation of Gaurela-Pendra-Marwahi in 2020. The maps and charts capture this evolution, alongside “Did You Know?” insights like the symbolic origin of the state’s name—“Land of 36 Forts”—and the existence of 14 semi-autonomous princely states under the Eastern States Agency. This visual narrative highlights how historical identity, tribal assertion, and political will shaped the formation of one of India’s youngest statesmbine to tell a compelling story of Bihar’s evolution through time.
