ISRO Chandrayaan and Mangalyaan Fridge Magnets

India’s first Chandrayaan mission, launched in October 2008, remained operational until August 2009. It was intended to orbit and study the moon for two years. The first Chandrayaan mission was instrumental in the discovery of water on the moon and then hit the headlines again a decade later for its own surprising rediscovery in orbit around the moon.

On August 20, 2019, India successfully launched its second lunar mission. Chandrayaan-2 mission is a highly complex mission, which represents a significant technological leap compared to the previous missions of ISRO. It comprised an Orbiter, Lander and Rover to explore the unexplored South Pole of the Moon. The mission is designed to expand the lunar scientific knowledge through detailed study of topography, seismography, mineral identification and distribution, surface chemical composition, thermo-physical characteristics of top soil and composition of the tenuous lunar atmosphere, leading to a new understanding of the origin and evolution of the Moon.

The Mars Orbiter Mission (M.O.M.), also called Mangalyaan was India’s first interplanetary mission and was majorly led by women! In 2013, India reached the Mars - the Red Planet - India's space odyssey got a turbo boost.  Mangalyaan launched a probe carrying five instruments to study aspects of the red planet, from its mineral composition to potential signs of past life. The success in placing the spacecraft in the Martian orbit has made India the fourth space power after the United States, Europe and Russia to orbit or land on the Red Planet. With this, India has become the first nation in the world to have entered the Mars orbit in the first attempt. European, US and Russian probes have managed to orbit or land on the planet, but after several attempts.
